Engineering Challenge
Hold an h6 diameter over a 200 mm shaft length, with straightness and roundness good enough for bearing-supported rotation in a test cell, and supply a full dimensional report with the batch.
DFM Analysis
Drawing reviewed for grinding allowance, centre holes and datum faces. 316 grade confirmed for corrosion resistance in a humid cell environment. Holding diameters on both ends between centres proposed so that concentricity is controlled by the setup rather than by re-chucking. Passivation sequenced after grinding so the dimensional result is preserved.
Manufacturing Solution
Shafts turned to leave a controlled grinding allowance on both journals, with centre holes prepared in the same setup. Cylindrical grinding brought the journals to h6 with diameter measured at multiple positions along the length. Passivation applied as the final step, followed by handling and packing that protects the ground surfaces.
Inspection Method
Diameters measured at several positions on each journal, plus straightness and runout checks. Full dimensional report issued with the batch, and the mill certificate for the 316 material supplied with grade and heat number.
Final Result
All 200 shafts accepted at receiving inspection without rework. The customer standardised the same shaft design across two further test cells, with the grinding and passivation steps held to the same process.
