Engineering Challenge
Maintaining parallel gripping surfaces within 0.02 mm after hard anodizing. Hard anodizing grows the surface by 25–50 µm per face, which can open or close gripping gaps unpredictably if not accounted for before machining.
DFM Analysis
Drawing reviewed for anodizing allowance on critical gripping surfaces. Datum surfaces identified for masking. Inspection method agreed before production: CMM measurement of jaw gap and parallelism on first-article piece.
Manufacturing Solution
Gripper fingers machined 0.05 mm tight on grip faces to compensate for anodizing growth. Datum reference surfaces masked during anodizing. First-article CMM report shared before batch production.
Inspection Method
CMM measurement of grip-face parallelism, jaw gap width and bore diameter on first article. Critical dimension report supplied with every batch.
Final Result
All 100 fingers passed final inspection. Customer confirmed grip-force consistency and zero rework on assembly. Repeat order placed for next production line.
