How to get from a first concept to a validated robot part: one-piece machining, DFM feedback, first-article inspection and the change to repeat production.
Start With One Piece
A CNC robot parts prototype does not need a minimum quantity. Machining from stock means a design can be cut, measured, fitted and revised without tooling cost - which is exactly why prototype robot parts are usually machined rather than cast or moulded. The first article is also where a design is most likely to change, so choosing a process that tolerates change saves the most.
What to Send at Prototype Stage
A STEP model plus a PDF drawing is the ideal package. Depending on how settled the design is, the drawing can be informal - what matters is that it identifies the datums that the part locates from, the interfaces that have to fit something else, the material and finish, and which features are provisional. If a feature is still being decided, say so; we can machine a version that leaves material for a later change.
DFM Feedback Before Anything Is Cut
Every drawing is reviewed before a quote is issued. At prototype stage this review is more valuable than at any other time, because a change is still free. Typical findings are sharp internal corners that need a tool radius, pockets that are too deep for their width, an over-tight general tolerance, or a coating allowance that has not been considered on a bore. We raise the issue and the alternative before machining.
Material and Finish for a Prototype
Prototype parts are often machined in the material the production part will use, so that weight, stiffness and thread behaviour are realistic. Where the production part will be hard anodized, the prototype is usually anodized too - the coating changes fits, and a prototype that ignores it can fit perfectly and then fail in production. Where only fit is being checked, an as-machined part is the faster and cheaper route.
First Article and Design Changes
A first article inspection measures the first part against every dimension on the drawing before the rest of the batch is machined. For a prototype, the same data doubles as a design check: measured values against a feature that turned out to be critical are what tell you whether the next revision needs a tighter callout or a different geometry. We can hold a prototype batch at one piece until the inspection data has been reviewed.
From Prototype to Repeat Production
Once a design is validated, the same program and the same inspection level carry into repeat production. There is no re-qualification step and no new tooling, so a validated prototype can be reordered at any volume. That is the practical meaning of prototype to repeat production: one process, two different quantities.
