Mechanical Properties Comparison
6061-T6 offers a tensile strength of approximately 310 MPa with excellent ductility. 7075-T6 reaches 572 MPa — nearly double — making it the preferred alloy where weight reduction and structural performance matter. For most mounting brackets and camera mounts, 6061-T6 is sufficient. For gripper fingers, lightweight EOAT plates and high-speed structural components, 7075-T6 is recommended.
Machinability
6061-T6 machines very freely with excellent surface finish and low tool wear. 7075-T6 machines nearly as well but is slightly more abrasive — tool life is moderately shorter. Both alloys respond well to standard CNC milling, turning and drilling operations. Cost difference in machining is typically small; the material cost itself is the primary difference.
Anodizing Response
Both alloys anodize well. 6061-T6 produces a slightly clearer Type II anodize and accepts colors more predictably. 7075-T6 anodizes slightly darker in clear Type II and responds well to hard anodize (Type III) — making it the standard choice for wear-resistant EOAT. Black anodize works well on both alloys.
When to Choose 6061
Use 6061-T6 for general mounting plates, camera mounts, brackets, housings and fixture frames where strength requirements are moderate. It is less expensive and slightly easier to machine than 7075.
When to Choose 7075
Choose 7075-T6 for gripper fingers, high-cycle EOAT components, lightweight structural members and any part where reducing mass is a priority — particularly on high-speed or collaborative robots where payload capacity is limited.
